A wireless microphone is one of the hardest-working parts of a fitness studio sound system.
When it’s working properly, nobody gives it much thought. The instructor puts on the headset, switches on the bodypack and starts the class.
When it isn’t working properly, everybody notices.
Dropouts, interference, crackling, poor range or a headset that struggles with the demands of regular fitness use can quickly become a problem for both the instructor and the class.

We’ve worked with wireless microphone systems in health clubs, leisure centres and fitness studios for many years, and there are a few things we’ve learned about what really matters.
A fitness instructor needs freedom to move
For Group Exercise, wireless isn’t really an optional convenience.
An instructor may be moving continuously around the studio while demonstrating exercises, coaching participants and controlling the music. The wireless system needs to give them reliable coverage throughout the area in which they’re working.
In a well-designed system, the instructor shouldn’t need to think about where the receiver is or whether moving to the other side of the room will cause the microphone to drop out.
That’s partly about choosing the right equipment, but it’s also about how that equipment is installed.
Reliability matters more than the specification sheet
Wireless microphone specifications can tell you plenty about frequency range, transmission technology and operating distance.
They don’t necessarily tell you how well a system will perform in a particular fitness studio.
Other wireless equipment, the construction and size of the room, receiver position and aerial placement can all affect performance.
A system that works perfectly well in one studio may behave quite differently in another.
That’s why we’re far more interested in reliable performance throughout the actual room than an impressive range figure on a specification sheet.
The headset has a particularly hard life
Most commercial fitness studios will already be using a headset sold for fitness use, and we’d certainly hope that’s the case.
The more useful question is whether that headset is designed to cope with the actual workload of the studio.
A microphone used by one instructor for a few classes each week has a very different life from one being passed between instructors throughout a busy timetable.
Sweat, movement, repeated fitting and removal, cable strain and the way the microphone is stored between classes all play a part.
EMic, Aeromic and Cyclemic are designed for different levels and types of fitness use, so the right choice depends on where the microphone is being used and what is being asked of it.
A dropout doesn’t necessarily mean the headset has failed
When an instructor reports that the microphone is cutting out, it’s tempting to blame the headset.
Sometimes it is the headset. But not always.
The problem could be the bodypack, its connector, batteries, the receiver, aerial positioning, radio interference or something elsewhere in the audio system.
Crackling can be particularly misleading because moving the headset cable may appear to trigger the problem when the actual fault is at the connection to the bodypack.
We’ve seen plenty of studio microphone problems where simply buying another headset wouldn’t have fixed the underlying fault.
Proper fault finding means working through the system rather than replacing parts until the problem disappears.
Receiver and aerial positioning matter
You can buy a very good wireless system and still make it perform badly.
One thing we regularly look at when investigating radio microphone problems is where the receiver and its aerials have been installed.
A receiver sitting inside a rack surrounded by equipment and cabling may not have the same radio performance as one with its aerials correctly positioned.
Room size and construction matter too.
For larger or more difficult studios, remote aerials or a different receiver location can sometimes make a substantial difference.
The microphone is only part of the sound system
Once the instructor’s voice reaches the wireless receiver, it still has a journey to make.
It passes through the studio mixer and possibly other processing before reaching the amplifier and loudspeakers.
Gain structure, microphone EQ, loudspeaker positioning and the acoustics of the room all affect how clearly the instructor can be heard and how much level can be achieved before feedback.
So if somebody tells us their microphone isn’t loud enough, our first answer isn’t automatically to sell them a different microphone.

What about Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless microphones?
There are now plenty of inexpensive wireless microphone products available online, particularly using Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz.
For an individual instructor looking for something portable, some of these products may appear attractive.
That’s a different requirement from a permanently installed wireless microphone system expected to work reliably through a commercial studio timetable.
For a health club or leisure centre, we’d normally be looking at a professional radio microphone system chosen and installed for the environment in which it’s going to operate.

Choosing the right wireless microphone for a fitness studio
There isn’t one wireless microphone system that’s right for every studio.
We look at the size and use of the room, the class timetable, existing equipment, radio environment and how the microphone is going to be used.
For an individual instructor, portability and the ability to use their own headset with different systems may be important.
For a busy commercial studio, reliability, durability and ease of use across a whole timetable are usually much higher up the list.
