So what is a windshield, what do they do and why do I need one?
A windshield, windscreen, pop filter or whatever you may call it takes various forms depending on its use. In a recording studio they are larger round discs made from a few different materials used to protect £100’s or even £1000,s worth of microphone and ensure the best recorded quality. In our environment it’s a foam torpedo/ ball on the end of your head mic that serves a few similarly important purposes.
The first as the name might suggest aims to avoid wind noise. Watch any video taken outside on a windy day. Little fear of that in a studio but there are the plosives of speech and breath that every instructor has experienced. Imagine you are talking with a candle a short distance from your mouth. Use any word beginning with P or B for example and what happens to the candles flame, it flickers, quite a bit right? That is energy. And I’m pretty sure you’ve all heard the results when someone hasn’t used a windshield. Didn’t sound good did it? Oh, and a little tip, don’t blow on your mic as a test. ‘One two test’ just works.
Your tiny windshield is protecting the delicate diaphragm (typically 0.019mm) of your mic capsule that may well cost £100’s from that energy. Because of the delicate nature of the diaphragm it’s also important to protect it from salts and saliva that will cause corrosion and damage. If used for an extended time without a windshield it’s extremely likely you’ll notice it’s output decrease as corrosion sets in and the salt etc build up and reduce the sensitivity of your capsule. Our windshields provide this protection.
But it’s ’s just a bit of foam right? No, not at all. As you’ve seen above, it has to fulfil some important tasks. Because of this it can’t be made of just any old foam. It must be acoustically transparent to allow sound through for you to be heard. This involves further production processes and therefore cost. It has to be of a diameter and length to satisfactorily cover and protect. It has to fit tightly enough to stay in place but able to be removed for cleaning/drying and good hygiene.
